QR signs placed on the island main settlements

What is this about?

WikiKythnos initiates a set of educational and collaborative activities and workshops, aligned with the scope and values of Wikipedia, with the aim of empowering a mindful community to create and enrich articles concerning the island of Kythnos.

How it all began?

Initially the Municipality of Kythnos, invited the locals, the associations and schools of the island to action, then the Kythnians living in Attica and abroad and those who love the island and feel like Kythnians.

This diverse community discussed and suggested the topics and the corresponding articles that could be created or enriched about the island. Existing and new articles about landmarks, monuments, historical events and people, tradition and environmental facts and figures about Kythnos were edited for the largest free online Encyclopedia.

The community

This diverse community discussed and suggested the topics and the corresponding articles that could be created or enriched about the island. Existing and new articles about landmarks, monuments, historical events and people, tradition and environmental facts and figures about Kythnos were edited for the largest free online Encyclopedia.

12 experts spoke on selected topics in 3 open talks organized on the island and equipped the aspiring WikiKythnians with insights in regards to reliable sources. Their presentations were recorded and are accessible online for further use. Many community members contributed in various ways to the project. The talks are available in Greek here .

Over 50 WikiKythnians assembled a mindful community.

Educational actions

A series of Wikipedia HOW TO Lessons were organized into modules and produced as vidcasts available to the wider community on YouTube.

For 12 consecutive weeks, the Wikipedians delivered real time online workshops providing further input, information and know-how to the engaged community. .

Articles

Over 30 articles related to a wide range of topics of Kythnian interest were created or edited.

In this way, Kythnos landmarks such as Maroulas, Vryokastro, Panagia Kanala, Agios Savvas and John the Evangelist of Chora,, Agios Minas of Dryopida,, Kakovo and Katafikialong with elements of local tradition such as thermionic cheese and the natural beauties of the island (the Fauna and Flora of Kythnos, the Natura Area and the Tombolo of Kolona) have acquired their respective articles in the Greek Wikipedia.

Multimedia & Oral Histories

Oral histories by locals, practicing traditional professions and touching on the key traits of Kythnos were also uploaded on Wikipedia.

Οver 300 photos were uploaded to Wikipedia (Wikimedia Commons) and are available under free license.

Global Outreach

In Wikivoyage, the free online travel guide, the article on Kythnos has been enriched with visitor information and numerous facts on food and hospitality services.

Many of the above articles, apart from Greek, have been added or enriched in 5 other languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish)

Branded signs were placed in the 5 largest settlements of the island with QR Codes allowing the visitors of the island to access with their mobile phone the respective articles in English and from there to any other language.

Such signs can be found opposite the Town Hall as well as at the port in Merichas and Loutra and at the entrance of Dryopida and Kanala.
